Stereotypes Essays (1501 words) - Sports, Individual Sports

Stereotypes In Sports People today stereotype skaters and surfers as lazy, no good potheads. I would have to dissagree with that statement. Police harrass skaters for skating in parking lots and on the streets of their towns. It is like the police think that they are going to do more than skate. It is the same with surfers, people think they do not hold jobs, their lazy, and all that they do is smoke pot. Those things are (for the most part) not true. In my paper I will give three examples of people that do not live this stereotype; however, they have actually become pillars of the community. In addition to their community stature they also have become idols to thousands of children across the world. Surfing is an ancient sport first practiced by Hawaiian kings. Early surfers rode 14 to 18 foot wooden boards that weighed over 150 pounds (Tomalin1). Duke Kahanamoka introduced surfing to the United States in 1912 (Weir3). If you asked someone who is the father of surfing, they would probably say, "Duke who?" But mention Kelly Slater and they will not stop talking. Robert Kelly Slater was born February 11, 1912 in Cocoa Beach Florida (Tomlin1). He went to high school and actually graduated. The reason I say this is because most people like Kelly (surfers knowing they are going to go professional) never graduate high school. Kelly grew up in Florida all his life. He was a local hero in central Florida, because everyone knew he was destined to make it as a professional surfer (Tee Interview). From 1992 thru 1994 Kelly placed first in the Maui Pro, second in the Maui Masters, and third place in the Rip Curl Pro, the Chiemesee Pipe Masters, and the Gotcha Lacanau Pro (Solano1). In 1995 he, from surfing alone, made 57,750 dollars (Solano1). Kelly won four world titles by 1996, one in 1992, 1994, 1995, and again in 1996 (Solano1). In 1996 Kelly was a busy boy, he won his fourth world title as well as 50% of his WCT Tournaments; moreover Kelly collected over 300, 895 dollars in prize money alone. In 1997 he won 446,295 dollars in eleven events(Solano2). Kelly has brought so much popularity to the sport that it may even be a sport at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games. Surfing is not the only thing this master of the "green room" is involved with. He was featured on "Baywatch" from 1992-1993 as Jimmy Slade (Tomlin4). He has also been in numerous surfing videos. Kelly has been in surfer Magazine's : Island Voyage(1995), Pacific Rim (1995), Velocity (1995), Voluptous (1996), and On Edge (1996) (Salano5). Kelly also has his own band called "The Surfers". "The Surfers" consist of Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Peter King (Sullivan118). Kelly is also an owner of a longboard/skateboard company "Sector 9" based in Florida. At the "Longboard House" in Indialantic Beach, Florida they sell on average four "Sector 9's" daily (Tee Interview). Which comes out to over 480 dollars a day. The reason Florida has the biggest "Sector 9" sales, is because it is very flat there, and flat ground is the best surface for Longboards (Tee). They are made for crusing up and down the boardwalks and side streets on your way to the beach. Kelly also owns a surfboard shaping company. It specializes in shaping "fish". Fish are no bigger than five and a half feet. Ron Jon's (a well known surf shop) carries Kelly's boards more than any other brand, and Ron Jon's happens to be the world's largest surf shop chains. So you see how popular his boards are. Kelly has to be the most successful surfer-businessmen out there today. In-line skating is big and bigger than it has ever been. Among the 6 to 17 year old crowd, only soccer and basketball are more popular athletic activities (O'Conner 1). "In the skating world I'm extremely famous and it feels cool," says 23 year old Arlo Eisenberg (O'Conner1). Arlo has been called the Michael Jordan of agressive in-line skating. If every sport has to have it's idols, then put Arlo Eisenberg at the top of the in-line skaters list. This Dallas native has been in a countless number of in-line skating videos and featured on in-line skating magazine covers. Arlo started skating at the age of fourteen and never once looked back. Throughout the country at exhibitions, competitions, apperances - wherever he is around a skating crowd- he gets the full star treatment. Name chanting, autograph hounding, worshipful gazes, the whole bit.

HOW TO FIND EXPERT SOURCES FOR ARTICLES

HOW TO FIND EXPERT SOURCES FOR ARTICLES Quotes from experts on a topic lend authority to your articles, and can make the difference between a sale to a magazine and another rejection slip for your collection. What kind of experts should you look for? Doctors are the number one expert for any sort of medical topic. If you’re covering legal matters, talk to a lawyer. A professor or scientist who’s published research on a subject is an expert, as is anyone who teaches the subject, works in a field related to the subject, or who has written a nonfiction book on the topic. Interviewing these people and including their thoughts and comments in your article gives readers – and editors – the information they’re looking for. So how do you find these experts? One or all of the following should yield you multiple authorities you can interview on almost any topic: People you know. Your personal doctor, the lawyer who’s your neighbor and the fitness instructor who goes to your church are all potential experts you could interview. These people are often the easiest for you to contact, but their knowledge may not always be the best, and after very many articles your small circle of acquaintances won’t yield enough experts to sustain your writing career. Any large University. Universities have media liaisons whose primary job is to connect the professors, research fellows, doctors at the university hospital, and others with journalists who are eager to hear what these professionals have to say. Call the University’s main number, ask for the media relations department and explain what you’re writing about.Chances are the liaison will find you an expert to interview. Profnet (profnet.com) This is my personal favorite. Register for free as a journalist with Profnet, then post your query. You can select the type of people you want to interview (professors, doctors, book authors) etc. andProfnet will send the query out to thousands of colleges and universities, large corporations, public relations firms and individuals who will contact you Help a Reporter Out. (helpareporter.com) Like Profnet, this is a service where you can post a query and receive responses from people all over the United States who are willing, even eager, to help you. If you think these experts won’t want to talk to little old you, think again. People like to talk about themselves and their interests. If you can possibly get their name in a magazine one day, so much the better. Tips to keep in mind: Have a list of questions prepared for your interview. Some sources want to see these beforehand. Always ask â€Å"Who else should I talk to about this subject? I’ve gotten some terrific leads to other experts this way. Say thank you. Send a follow-up email or written note. And be sure to send a copy of the article when it’s published.

How a Tree Grows - A Brief Overview

How a Tree Grows - A Brief Overview Little of a trees volume is actually living tissue. Just 1% of a tree is actually alive and composed of living cells. The major living portion of a growing tree is a thin film of cells just under the bark (called the cambium) and can be only one to several cells thick. Other living cells are in root tips, the apical meristem, leaves, and buds. The overwhelming portion of all trees is made up of non-living tissue created by a cambial hardening into non-living wood cells on the inner cambial layer. Sandwiched between the outer cambial layer and the bark is an ongoing process of creating sieve tubes which transport food from leaves to roots. So, all wood is formed by the inner cambium and all food-conveying cells are formed by the outer cambium. Apical Growth Tree height and branch lengthening begin with a bud. Tree height growth is caused by the apical meristem whose cells divide and elongate at the base of the bud to create upward growth in trees with a dominant crown tip. There can be more than one developing crown if a trees top is damaged. Certain conifers cannot produce these growth cells and height growth stops at the crown tip. Tree branch growth works in a similar way using buds at the apex of each twig. These twigs become the future branches of trees. Transfer of genetic material in the process will cause these buds to grow at determined rates, creating a tree species height and form. Tree trunk growth is coordinated with the increase of tree height and width. When buds begin opening in the early Spring, cells in the trunk and limbs get the signal to increase in girth by dividing and in height by elongating. Root Cap Growth Early root growth is a function of meristematic root tissue located near the tip of the root. The specialized meristem cells divide, producing more meristem called root cap cells which protect the meristem and undifferentiated root cells while pushing through the soil. The undifferentiated cells become the primary tissues of the developing root during elongation and the process that pushes the root tip forward in the growing medium. Gradually these cells differentiate and mature into specialized cells of the root tissues.

Complexity Theory Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Complexity Theory - Article Example The chaos approach involves consideration of an overall state of being within the organization, with the state of chaos facilitating the need for change in the business environment or becoming the desired state of an organization to bring about much needed change. Both approaches are considered within the healthcare setting, as well as in the global business expansion realm. Examples of the types of change required for each situation apply the different approaches of chaos and the continuum. Defining Complexity Theory Complexity theory is based on the principle that various processes within a business production unit are comprised of tasks, with varying levels or degrees of difficulty. Complex systems are fractal in nature, comprised of complex patterns with similarities, though they may possess varying degrees of complexity (Lindberg et al, 1998). Though Lindberg applies the theory to the healthcare industry, it can easily be adapted to nearly industry or organization with outputs o r processes of production. A comparison of patient management and organizational management is used to explain the theory’s application to healthcare. The complication of treating interacting health care issues is compared to the challenge of administering healthcare in a cost effective manner. Views on Complexity Theory Early supporters of complexity theory explain the phenomenon as a mechanical process that follows a specific cause and effect pattern, such as in disease processes. However, opposing perspectives suggest that the processes are made up of a combination of complex activities and the combination of various facets is what makes a system complex. In such a view, healthcare is a complex system in itself, made up of challenges in addressing patient health issues, challenges in the administration of healthcare and challenges in preparing healthcare providers to care for an increasingly diverse population. It is the degree of challenge or difficulty in addressing each of these areas of the industry that drives innovation, or new ways of delivery within the system. The Continuum Approach Complexity is explained as existing on a continuum between chaos and stability. All complex systems go through change, which, at times, pushes those systems toward the brink of chaos and away from stability. This explanation is applicable to many industries and types of businesses struggling to find their way in a global environment. To do so often requires change, or adapting new ways of looking at the business environment. Often change disrupts the methods and current strategies used by an organization. However, when an organization faces change or develops a change strategy, a means of greater contribution from each member of the organization is created. In the more stable environment, there is less contribution, as everyone exists in more of a state of complacency. Complexity and Change If complexity theory relates to change, then it makes sense to assume tha t the more change is needed within the organization, the more complex the system becomes. Greater contributions from a variety of sources make the change process inherently more complex. In the health care setting, just as in any other business environment, some problems or issues do not require complexity. A patient having a mole removed expects little, in terms of the unknown. The procedure and results

Comparison and Contrast (Point by Point) exactly four points Essay

Comparison and Contrast (Point by Point) exactly four points - Essay Example This paper will discuss how men and women shop for essentials, how they treat shopping as relaxation or socialization and what they consider important when buying things. Women have been dubbed as extravagant because of their role in the household. As the gender which was predominantly thought of as housekeepers and child caregivers, women went to the grocery store more often than men. They would think about everybody’s needs and they buy everything that the whole household needs (Brennan). This spares the men from going to the market or the mall. When men need to buy their own essentials, they would seldom think about the other members of the family so that they are often focused on one department when they go shopping, making them stay for a shorter period of time compared to women. On the contrary, women often shop their own needs including the needs of other loved ones so that they would need to go to the ladies’ department, children’s wears, men’s clothes as well as the groceries in just one shopping spree. This means that norms demanded women to shop more than men, buying almost everybody’s needs while men wou ld sometimes go shopping but not for everybody. Meanwhile, feminism and modernization brought changes not only in family arrangements but how men act as consumers as well. According to Todd Hale, senior vice president of the Nielsen Company, â€Å"men (are) facing higher unemployment than women (therefore) they are taking a more active role in household duties†. Nevertheless, statistics show that the spending of males in 2004 has not changed much in 2010 although there is a slight increase in the number of male consumers in dollar, supercenter, grocery and other products. This strengthens the point made earlier that the role of women as housekeepers makes shopping a part of their daily business and therefore they

Generation Gap Essay Example for Free

Generation Gap Essay Since the industrial revolution was experienced in the United States, technological evolution has caused generation gaps between people. Advances such as computers and the Internet, space research and security systems are but a few of the systems that continue to evolve beyond the capacity of yesterdays technology-savvy people. Televisions in 2011 are quite complex. Even people who use gaming systems that have progressed from old joysticks to the reading of a persons physical movement for game play have surpassed those who were satisfied with the less complicated systems. Clothing The evolution of clothing promotes gaps between generations, and has done so for years. This is often led by movie stars, rock stars and other artists. Ingenuity in clothing and the desire for the next item in demand continues to push clothing to new limits. What was once considered risque by grandparents is now acceptable and worn daily by grandchildren. As clothing changes and evolves, this generation gap often finds itself thriving in between parents and their children. Language Language has been evolving for thousands of years. Nouns have become verbs; this often aligns with the technology evolution, along with increasing exposure to the Internet. Social sites and chat rooms have encouraged a new generation of language founded on acronyms and shortened phrases. Many people who are unfamiliar with this find themselves lost on social media sites and in chat rooms. Some of this language is carrying into the daily speech of some people. Oftentimes, questions are answered with, I dont know, just Google it. Music Always evolving, music has often been blamed for opening the gap between different generations. Messages change, styles change and there is always a push for the development of a new sound. Music brings back memories that people tend to hang on to. Because of this connection, people have a tendency to hang onto the music of their generation and may eventually find distaste in the music of other generations. This creates widening gaps between generations, some of which have been monumental. Over the course of 20 years, the telephone has evolved and taken on tremendous changes. Gone are the days of circular dials; in are the smartphones that think for themselves. It is because of the evolution of technology that generation gaps exist between the two different types of phones. People experience the same circumstances. The evolution of technology, clothing, language and music are classic examples of causes of generation gaps.

Ways Shakespeare builds dramatic tension in Act 2 scene 2 of Henry V :: essays research papers

In what ways does Shakespeare build up dramatic tension in Act 2 scene 2 of ?Henry V Act 2 is broken into three major parts. Henry decides to play a game which will set the trap for the traitors. The next part is when Henry explodes, expressing his anger. The last part is when Henry turns positive and changes the subject and looks towards France. But in scene 1 we meet the common characters. These would have been the sort of people that Henry would of socialised with when he was younger. This is a huge contrast to which Henry is during scene 2.As he is very serious and cunning. Act 2 scene 2 starts with the entrance of the three Lords. Exeter, Bedford and Westmoreland. This immediately shows us that we are going to expect seriousness and significance within this scene. Bedford starts by saying ?Fore God his grace is bold to trust these traitors.? This is a reference to the Divine Right Of Kings. The idea that a king's right to rule comes from God and that he is answerable to God alone. But with this reference the audience would worry about Henry Iv?s Interruption. After Edward III died the reign passed on to Richard II. But he quickly became un popular. People accused him of being cursed. Richard II exiled Henry IV for 6 years but when he returned he over threw Richard and became King. He then had a son Named Henry V. But this interrupted the Divine Right of Kings. Everyone would think that he would have the same problem. But once Henry IV died, Henry Became King and showed great leader ship and courage. ?Henry V? was written to inspire and to convey a message that would prevent civil war in Britain, as Elizabeth I was old and dying without an heir and so civil could break out and manipulate the country with out control. The theatre would be a place of spreading political and opinionated ideas around the country . So Shakespeare has written a play to inspire and warn the audience about the consequences it could have. So as there wasn?t many newspapers it was a good place to convey a moral or a story. Shakespeare uses several techniques. To keep the audience in suspense, Shakespeare uses machiavellianism. Machiavellianism is a word which describes a persons tendency to deceive or to manipulate.

Thantopsis and the Road Theme Death

AP English Period 5 William Bryant uses imagery of Nature’s beauty to create a theme that death is beautiful and serene, while Cormac McCarthy uses imagery darkness and dead things to create a theme that death is scary and dark. Bryant’s perception of death shows that it is interconnected with nature at which it is a life cycle. He shows us a different perspective on how death is. His use of creative imagery of nature to death creates the theme of death being not as bad as it seems. McCarthy’s view of death differs from Bryant’s view.McCarthy uses a post-apocalyptic world where nature is dead to support the theme that death is horrible. Both authors use imagery to show the relationship between life and death to create themes opposite of each other. In Thanatopsis, the author shows the theme about death by comparing it to nature’s beauty. Most people see death as horrible, but Bryant shows an in-depth meaning to it. The poem starts off by personifyin g nature as a beautiful female, â€Å"†¦and a smile and eloquence of beauty† (Lines 4-5), who will always be there for you to make you feel better, â€Å"Into his darker musings, with a mild and healing sympathy. (Lines 6-8) The poem takes a shift and talks about how death feels like â€Å"Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall and breathless darkness, and the narrow house,† (Lines 11-12) and the idea of being in pain in a dark coffin. The poem continues going back and forth on nature’s beauty and death, and soon connects it back to the theme. â€Å"Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again, (Line 23)† shows that after death is another phase of life itself, and we will return to be one with nature. Our dead decomposing bodies will be mixed in with nature, â€Å"Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mould. Line 30)† Bryant compares nature to a coffin, â€Å"Are but the solemn decorations all of the great tomb of man. † (Line 44- 45), to show the coffins of dead people created nature’s beauty, the valleys, hills, rivers. Bryant leaves a message to the living that death, the great equalizer, is inevitable and everyone will die eventually, â€Å"The youth†¦ gray-headed man. †(Line 68-70) He then continues on telling the message that you only live once, so live your life to your full potential, â€Å"So Live,† (Line 73) and be aware that death will eventually come â€Å"with a blanket around him and getting ready for a happy, dream-filled sleep,† (Line 80-81).You will not go to death alone. Everyone who has ever died will already be there. Everyone who hasn't gone yet will be there eventually. Bryant connects nature with death because it’s with all the death that Mother Nature’s beauty was created, and as you become one with nature. In The Road, McCarthy makes death a darker and scary theme. Since the beginning to the end of the book, McCarthy uses imagery to show that death is horrible. As the father and son are on the road, the father describes everything he sees He tells detail imagery on the dead trees, no colors, ash; abandon man-made objects, like buildings and trains, and others.Every living thing in the world is dead, so they savage what they can from abandon houses to keep themselves from starving, and freezing to death. There is a constant fear of dying from the boy, â€Å"Are we going to die? Sometime. Not Now,† (Page 10) but the father knows that they are going to die, but not now. The Father and son are out in an unforgiving, dangerous world where even the slightest misstep could lead to death, so they keep on moving. All they see is death, â€Å"Inside the barn three bodies hanging from the rafters, dried and dusty,† (Page 16) as they move. The boy has seen so much death in his short life that he learns to accept it and understand that death is here. The father is only living because of the son, and it is his respon sibility to find him a safe place, as the son is only living for his father. The boy said, â€Å"I wish I was with my mom,† because he wishes to be dead like his mother. The first death that both the father and son witness was his mother death. The mother didn’t want to live anymore because she couldn’t face the world as it is filled with cannibals and murderers, â€Å"they are going to rape us and kill us and eat us and you won’t face it.You’d rather wait for it to happen. But I can’t. † (p. 58). The father and son are always on the move because of the fear that they will be eaten by cannibals. In the mansion, the father opened up the room, and saw living humans held captive to be food for the cannibals. The father and son saw a beheaded, gutted out, baby over a fire when they were starving for food (Page 199). Death is everywhere in The Road. They are always on the constant move so they can run away from death by finding food and wa rmth, while hiding from the cannibals. Both works of literature gives a clear relationship between life and death. McCarthy shows imagery that describes that death is horrible. The constant running to find what they can to eat while hiding from cannibals show that death is at the door, and it is only a matter of time before they die. Bryant’s imagery of death is more serene and beautiful. He gave a lighter and happier tone on death and how death shouldn’t not be feared, and live your life. Both McCarthy and Bryant uses imagery to show death as a beauty or scary.

Games Theory Essay

In game theory, Nash equilibrium (named after John Forbes Nash, who proposed it) is a solution concept of a game involving two or more players, in which each player is assumed to know the equilibrium strategies of the other players, and no player has anything to gain by changing only his own strategy unilaterally. If each player has chosen a strategy and no player can benefit by changing his or her strategy while the other players keep theirs unchanged, then the current set of strategy choices and the corresponding payoffs constitute Nash equilibrium. Stated simply, Amy and Phil are in Nash equilibrium if Amy is making the best decision she can, taking into account Phil’s decision, and Phil is making the best decision he can, taking into account Amy’s decision. Likewise, a group of players is in Nash equilibrium if each one is making the best decision that he or she can, taking into account the decisions of the others. However, Nash equilibrium does not necessarily mean the best payoff for all the players involved; in many cases, all the players might improve their payoffs if they could somehow agree on strategies different from the Nash equilibrium: e.g., competing businesses forming a cartel in order to increase their profits. The prisoner’s dilemma is a fundamental problem in game theory that demonstrates why two people might not cooperate even if it is in both their best interests to do so. It was originally framed by Merrill Flood and Melvin Dresher working at RAND in 1950. Albert W. Tucker formalized the game with prison sentence payoffs and gave it the â€Å"prisoner’s dilemma† name (Poundstone, 1992). A classic example of the prisoner’s dilemma (PD) is presented as follows: Two suspects are arrested by the police. The police have insufficient evidence for a conviction, and, having separated the prisoners, visit each of them to offer the same deal. If one testifies for the prosecution against the other (defects) and the other remains silent (cooperates), the defector goes free and the silent accomplice receives the full one-year sentence. If both remain silent, both prisoners are sentenced to only one month in jail for a minor charge. If each betrays the other, each receives a three-month sentence. Each prisoner must choose to betray the other or to remain silent. Each one is assured that the other would not know about the betrayal before the end of the investigation. How should the prisoners act? If we assume that each player cares only about minimizing his or her own time in jail, then the prisoner’s dilemma forms a non-zero-sum game in which two players may each either cooperate with or defect from (betray) the other player. In this game, as in most game theory, the only concern of each individual player (prisoner) is maximizing his or her own payoff, without any concern for the other player’s payoff. The unique equilibrium for this game is a Pareto-suboptimal solution, that is, rational choice leads the two players to both play defect, even though each player’s individual reward would be greater if they both played cooperatively. In the classic form of this game, cooperating is strictly dominated by defecting, so that the only possible equilibrium for the game is for all players to defect. No matter what the other player does, one player will always gain a greater payoff by playing defect. Since in any situation playing defect is more beneficial than cooperating, all rational players will play defect, all things being equal. In the iterated prisoner’s dilemma, the game is played repeatedly. Thus each player has an opportunity to punish the other player for previous non-cooperative play. If the number of steps is known by both players in advance, economic theory says that the two players should defect again and again, no matter how many times the game is played. Only when the players play an indefinite or random number of times can cooperation be an equilibrium (technically a subgame perfect equilibrium), meaning that both players defecting always remains an equilibrium and there are many other equilibrium outcomes. In this case, the incentive to defect can be overcome by the threat of punishment. In casual usage, the label â€Å"prisoner’s dilemma† may be applied to situations not strictly matching the formal criteria of the classic or iterative games, for instance, those in which two entities could gain important benefits from cooperating or suffer from the failure to do so, but find it merely difficult or expensive, not necessarily impossible, to coordinate their activities to achieve cooperation. Strategy for the classic prisoner’s dilemma The classical prisoner’s dilemma can be summarized thus: Prisoner B stays silent (cooperates) Prisoner B confesses (defects) Prisoner A stays silent (cooperates) Each serves 1 month Prisoner A: 1 year Prisoner B: goes free Prisoner A confesses (defects) Prisoner A: goes free Prisoner B: 1 year Each serves 3 months Imagine you are player A. If player B decides to stay silent about committing the crime then you are better off confessing, because then you will get off free. Similarly, if player B confesses then you will be better off confessing, since then you get a sentence of 3 months rather than a sentence of 1 year. From this point of view, regardless of what player B does, as player A you are better off confessing. One says that confessing (defecting) is the dominant strategy. As Prisoner A, you can accurately say, â€Å"No matter what Prisoner B does, I personally am better off confessing than staying silent. Therefore, for my own sake, I should confess.† However, if the other player acts similarly then you both confess and both get a worse sentence than you would have gotten by both staying silent. That is, the seemingly rational self-interested decisions lead to worse sentences—hence the seeming dilemma. In game theory, this demonstrates that in a non-zero-sum game a Nash equilibrium need not be a Pareto optimum. Although they are not permitted to communicate, if the prisoners trust each other then they can both rationally choose to remain silent, lessening the penalty for both of them. We can expose the skeleton of the game by stripping it of the prisoner framing device. The generalized form of the game has been used frequently in experimental economics. The following rules give a typical realization of the game. There are two players and a banker. Each player holds a set of two cards, one printed with the word â€Å"Cooperate† (as in, with each other), the other printed with â€Å"Defect† (the standard terminology for the game). Each player puts one card face-down in front of the banker. By laying them face down, the possibility of a player knowing the other player’s selection in advance is eliminated (although revealing one’s move does not affect the dominance analysis[1]). At the end of the turn, the banker turns over both cards and gives out the payments accordingly. Given two players, â€Å"red† and â€Å"blue†: if the red player defects and the blue player cooperates, the red player gets the Temptation to Defect payoff of 5 points while the blue player receives the Sucker’s payoff of 0 points. If both cooperate they get the Reward for Mutual Cooperation payoff of 3 points each, while if they both defect they get the Punishment for Mutual Defection payoff of 1 point. The checker board payoff matrix showing the payoffs is given below. These point assignments are given arbitrarily for illustration. It is possible to generalize them, as follows: Canonical PD payoff matrix Cooperate Defect Cooperate R, R S, T Defect T, S P, PWhere T stands for Temptation to defect, R for Reward for mutual cooperation, P for Punishment for mutual defection and S for Sucker’s payoff. To be defined as prisoner’s dilemma, the following inequalities must hold: T > R > P > S This condition ensures that the equilibrium outcome is defection, but that cooperation Pareto dominates equilibrium play. In addition to the above condition, if the game is repeatedly played by two players, the following condition should be added.[2] 2 R > T + S If that condition does not hold, then full cooperation is not necessarily Pareto optimal, as the players are collectively better off by having each player alternate between Cooperate and Defect. These rules were established by cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter and form the formal canonical description of a typical game of prisoner’s dilemma. A simple special case occurs when the advantage of defection over cooperation is independent of what the co-player does and cost of the co-player’s defection is independent of one’s own action, i.e. T+S = P+R. The iterated prisoner’s dilemma If two players play prisoner’s dilemma more than once in succession and they remember previous actions of their opponent and change their strategy accordingly, the game is called iterated prisoner’s dilemma. The iterated prisoner’s dilemma game is fundamental to certain theories of human cooperation and trust. On the assumption that the game can model transactions between two people requiring trust, cooperative behaviour in populations may be modelled by a multi-player, iterated, version of the game. It has, consequently, fascinated many scholars over the years. In 1975, Grofman and Pool estimated the count of scholarly articles devoted to it at over 2,000. The iterated prisoner’s dilemma has also been referred to as the â€Å"Peace-War game†. If the game is played exactly N times and both players know this, then it is always game theoretically optimal to defect in all rounds. The only possible Nash equilibrium is to always defect. The proof is inductive: one might as well defect on the last turn, since the opponent will not have a chance to punish the player. Therefore, both will defect on the last turn. Thus, the player might as well defect on the second-to-last turn, since the opponent will defect on the last no matter what is done, and so on. The same applies if the game length is unknown but has a known upper limit. Unlike the standard prisoner’s dilemma, in the iterated prisoner’s dilemma the defection strategy is counterintuitive and fails badly to predict the behavior of human players. Within standard economic theory, though, this is the only correct answer. The superrational strategy in the iterated prisoners dilemma with fixed N is to cooperate against a superrational opponent, and in the limit of large N, experimental results on strategies agree with the superrational version, not the game-theoretic rational one. For cooperation to emerge between game theoretic rational players, the total number of rounds N must be random, or at least unknown to the players. In this case always defect may no longer be a strictly dominant strategy, only a Nash equilibrium. Amongst results shown by Nobel Prize winner Robert Aumann in his 1959 paper, rational players repeatedly interacting for indefinitely long games can sustain the cooperative outcome.

It requires an efficient, effective, and complex management team that can formulate the best international policy choices that compete with the demands of the international integration.1 Notably, a strategic human resource management system should link and coordinate the standard international human resource to our strategies. It will seek to move our most qualified staff and advertising managers to china to limit catastrophic results caused by lack of quali fied expatriates.2 Therefore, it is critically important to incorporate an international human resource management system since the international assignments require adequate training before deployment. Through expert knowledge, consultation, and academics, this report seeks to identify themes, strategies, directions, and issues for international human resource management for the Chinese region. Generally, the primary objective of the human resource management will be to oversee the importance of the human labour in relation to the current physical resources and finance in order to make the most effective use of human lab our. Differences between human resource management and international human resource management Even though human resource managers have similar tasks compared to the international human resource managers, the international human resource managers have responsibilities that are more complex.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Additionally, they will have to cater for the needs of the different national subsidiaries, the parent country nationals, and the third country nationals.3 Local human resource managers only administer programs to a single group of national employees who are bound by similar taxation and compensation policies. However, international human resource managers are faced with challenges of administering and designing policies for a diverse group of employees. Additionally, international human resource managers have a greater involvement with their workers personal lives as compared to the local human resource managers.4 Recommendations in Management of Expatriates Preferably, management of expatriates is a critical aspect in our company. Therefore, the company has to agree on the m ost efficient integrated international human resource strategy. The strategies that will be developed are required to support the international relations. Notably, our findings have approved the ethnocentric approach to be a suitable practice for our company. The reason is that this approach will allow us to control the expatriates right here in Australia so as to regulate the cost and the company resources. Additionally, in order for our organization to run strategically, the firm will have to link the operational requirements with the new foreign assignment. The approach will allow our managers to identify the strategic decisions and the manner in which the advertising assignment will be managed. The success of the company depends on how the global managers manage their staff. Research has shown that most of the expatriates leave their companies after repatriation, which means that there is much loss of talents and experience.Advertising We will write a custom report sampl e on Strategic International Human Resource Management for the Chinese Region specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, loss of ex-repatriates mean another incur of cost by the firm since it will be required to train new managers for the future tasks5. Another important point to note is that these experienced managers are a loss to the competitors giving them a chance to outweigh the company. Lastly the company’s long term goals are lost. From this observation, it may be recommended that a good working relationship ought to be maintained between the company and the managers in terms of remuneration packages, appraisals and training programs.6 Preferably, training programs will help the expatriates to become prepared for the task. Through international human resource strategies, we can create new insights as to how regional economies and cultural diversity as well as political differences affect the international human resource in Ch ina. It will allow the managers to learn the current emerging issues of human resource management in china; the future directions and the innovations in the human resource management for the China republic.7 This will clearly create self-awareness, interpersonal skill, emotional stability, and flexibility to our advertising managers as they leave for their respective assignments.8 For instance, in the movement to China, the international human resource management will need to concentrate on language, culture, local living details, accommodations, expatriate administration, and local business briefing so as to adequately train our managers.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Recruitment and selection Selection of managers and recruitment that allows their deployment into international assignments will be the most challenging practice that our company is going to undertake. These assignments can only become efficient and effective only if we identifying the best and efficient expatriates for the China adverting operations. Through our international human resource management, we can develop competitive global managers who can effectively adapt to the constraints of the host country.9 Selection criteria In order to minimize poor returns and failure by our expatriates, it is important to have a selection program, which can help us choose the best team to deploy.10 Therefore, our international human resource management team for the selection criteria proposed the following considerations: Technical ability This will be the most vital factor to consider for our managers. Therefore our selection team needs to evaluate personal records of the selected managers so as to review the candidates potential and only come up with the most competent and skilled managers. Family requirements It is very important to look at the family requirements. The family ties will greatly influence the success of this assignment. It is very important to consider the expatriates’ willingness to serve overseas due to family ties or the willingness of the expatriates’ spouses to accept living overseas. Cross culture suitability Noting that out assignment will greatly relate to cultural interactions, it means that the expatriates have to be very conversant with the Chinese culture. Therefore, our managers will require positive attitude to foreigners and desirable attributes such as emotional stability, diplomacy, ease of adapting to languages and maturity so as to face the hardships and pressures when living in China.11 Considerably, what would seem as a normal practice and a custom for our country may turn out to be a taboo or an illegal practice in another country. Recruitment The next critical step after selection will be recruitment of our expatriates. This will ensure effective performance and no failure of our expatriate while abroad. Training them on cultural expectations will aid the managers to easily adapt to their new environments and exercise their cross cultural managerial skills. Additionally, having cultural seminars could help the affected parties to discuss their various experiences in different cultures.12 Performance and strategic management Frequent up-to-date feedbacks on the managers will be required during the assignment in order to measure their performance. Notably, this will help to decrease the risk of incurring losses from the failures of expatriates.13 For instance, feedback will help them to regulate costs such as payments of poor performing or failed employees. However, how will the international human resource strategy become implemented? The following are some of the recommendations that our team forwarded for an effective strategy implementation: The firm should ensure that the international human resource data base is computerized through ways such as creating a website so as to create an easy access to the human resource data The international human resource should be formulated in conjunction with the line managers so as to create a transnational mindset within the firm. Before implementation of any policies, it is important to investigate the degree into which the political, economic, cultural, and legal factors affect the integrated human resource policies. Remunerations Management of expatriates is a complex task since it comes from different backgrounds, and varies in skills and expediencies. Therefore, it is important that our human resource system comes up with a strategy that fairly distributes salary among our employees so as to avoid conflicts. This proposes that our international human resource managers ought to adapt must clearly define the terms and condit ions for the different remuneration packages. The managers must therefore be aware of their proposed salaries and the reason for having the stated packages before their deployments are set in order to avoid conflicts.14 For instance, the Chinese remuneration policies have been found to be inappropriate and inefficient according to the living standards. This depicts that our standard payment policy would have to be affected so as to match with the local practice. Conclusion International human resource management is a very critical system of managing human labour for global business, and differs from local human resource since it has wider and complex aspects that it should cater for. Managers in international human resource assignments need to evaluate issues including laws, culture, payment expectations, and integrated procedures in order to ensure that they have the best working relations with their staff. Learning with educational games - Essay Example Therefore, educational games and some activities in the textbooks are good learning strategies that help students in overcoming problems of information reception and acceptance. These are activities performed by students in order to develop their mental and physical abilities and also bring them fun and entertainment. In addition, learning with educational games helps students to acquire knowledge (Al-Ghamadi, 2009). Play, as a part of learning, has a number of benefits to students. Firstly, it promotes interaction between individual students. As the students interact, they also get to discover individual differences and personalities among them (Van, 2006). Lastly, games boost mental health by activating the mental capacity. Learning with games usually requires that students cluster into different learning groups. One advantage of this clustering during learning games is that a student gets his or her capabilities and superiority over the others. This fact gives one confidence and heightens self esteem. Gaming also promotes thinking and imagination of an individual since most games are usually in the form of puzzles. Besides, these games have rules that must be strictly adhered to. As students keep on following these simple rules of gaming, they also learn and grow up to be law abided citizens. He also plans and schedules the time and place for these
